I've had a D6417 since May 2006, 2 1/2 years. Paid $330 at Tigerdirect online. I like it. It's my fourth PC. My first was a DEC Starion 75 mHz Pentium with Win95. Loved it even th ough w95 was a little unstable compared to XP.
The problems I've h ad are failing RAM cards. When th at occurs, it gets squirrely and there is no way to tell what's going on, the symptoms bounce around, the error signals are insane and it's time to pull the RAM and replace it one by one.
No, the POST is NOT perfect. It does not always beep when the memory is faulty.
With bad RAM sometimes it won't boot, sometimes it'll boot but not load the O/S, sometimes it'll load the OS fine but later lock up at random times and events. Goes plain screwy.
It uses DDR PC3200 memory which is not the cheapest, darn it. So I"ve stopped buying the 1 gb card and stick with the 512 megs which are affordable. sort of.
Except for ram, this emachines seems robust, I am going to keep it a long time. I keep the cpu's from my first th ree boxes pasted to t he faceplate to remind me how i used to buy a box instead of fixing it. No more.
